My dad gets chronic UTIs due to failing prostate making him even more delirious than normal. He’s paranoid thinking every pain warrants the emergency room. He keeps running out the door and I can’t chase him being alone with toddler twins. Medicaid wants more paperwork than I’m able to locate to get him assistance for a nursing home. Are there any options? I feel he needs confinement and restraint but I just can’t provide it. I feel every day he becomes more of a threat to himself and my kids. I am going crazy and don’t know what to do.

Have you considered putting locks on the doors so he can’t get out? I worry that when your kids see grandpa taking off, they will too. Contact the National Autism Association for some ideas on how you can prevent Dad from taking off. They have access to window/door locks, alarms, etc. and can make suggestions on how you can keep Dad safe.

Also, have you checked if a facility would accept Dad Medicaid Pending? When my mom went to a nursing home, they did all the work and all the filing of forms. She was accepted within 4 months.

There are advocates out there who can help you with the paperwork nightmare of applying for Medicaid. An elder care attorney will give you a free consultation and LOTS of useful information. I went to one myself a few years ago and I can't begin to tell you how helpful he was. Be sure to Google 'elder care attorneys' and/or 'assistance with applying for Medicaid.'

I really feel for you, having two small children and a dad living with you with such serious issues. It's scary and you must feel terribly frightened. Sending you a big hug and lots of prayers that you can successfully navigate finding the right care for your dear dad.
