My mom is still at home with Hospice care, but they told us that if the situation got like the one you just described, that a nursing home would be the best option. She is too elderly herself to be able to handle this unless you can afford to hire caregivers or have family.
Not while at home. Dad could apply for and go to an independent Hospice center but would have to pay for the bed (Medicare daily rate) out of pocket. I don’t think Medicare will pay for overnight services (caregivers) not in the home. Unfortunately hospice does not provide 24/7 care. An alternative is for the family to pay out of pocket for a CG through an agency. Or if you have siblings work out a schedule to help your mother out. Sorry your father is so ill.
Since dad is on hospice, Medicare should be paying 100% of that cost. Some people think that hospice is 24/7 care. That is not the case. Hospice comes in a few times a week to help with bathing, medication and things like that.

Ask the hospice provider how it works. Then, of course, mom has to be willing to let him go. Is it possible mom doesn't want to use that benefit?
I don’t know American rules but would have thought his doctor could advise and help - especially since it is now seriously affecting your elderly mums well being.
Our healthcare is a lot different than other countries. We don't have "district" nurses. Medicare is health insurance we receive at 65. It only pays 80% of healthcare costs. The balance is paid by the individual or a suppliment that is purchased by us. Hospice in the home only covers an aide a few days a week and the same with a nurse. The rest of the time has to be covered by family or they hire someone. If low income, they may be able to get help thru Medicaid.
