Hello it's me again! Well after three weeks of FIL suffering with fractured vertebra the have now discovered he has multiple myeloma so fractures will not be fixed through kyphoplasty but rather treated with radiation to kill the nerves in that area as well as chemo drugs for the myeloma. He will go to a long term care so he has transport to and from the hospital for radiation. He is 89 MIL is 91. She can not be home alone and can not afford in home help.my husband has been with her for four weeks and his sister does weekends so he can come home. My question is can she stay at the long term care with him? Or does anyone have any similar experience and could give me some options?

What kind of long term care facility is FIL in? Is he there temporarily through his treatment period, or is this expected to be his home from now on?

What are MIL's impairments, that she cannot stay alone? Your profile says she is depressed and also might be in the early stage of dementia. Does she need skilled nursing?

Have your husband and his sister looked into applying for Medicaid for their parents? This covers both long term care facilities and some in-home services.

In my area couples will be able to be together in the same unit, but only if healthy. It sounds like you should find a facility that offers a continuum of care from assisted living to skilled nursing. Nursing home would only be available if doctor states it necessary. And in my area skilled nursing is in the area of $12,000.00 a month. While Medicare will pay for UP TO 100 days, if satisfactory improvement is not evident, then payment by insurance will stop.

If MIL can't afford in-home help she's likely not able to afford AL. And pam's right, NH's won't put married couples in the same room although they can stay in the same NH. Having your MIL move into a NH would probably be the best compromise since she can't stay home alone anyway. Medicare would cover her for a while and your husband can apply for Medicaid for his mom for the long term.

She can move to Assisted Living, hopefully in the same facility, but they seldom put couples in the same room, nor is there a two-for-one rate. Talk to the facility where he is going about the possibilities.
