My Dad had hip replacement surgery October 17, 2014. He had a set back after surgery with a bleeding ulcer. Finally released by hospital a week after a colonoscopy. He still did not do much PT and had multiple blood transfusions.
Now some three weeks into rehab I am told little and he still is a bit confused and belligerent. Psychiatrist was not much help and wants him in Haldol. They were trying to get him to take Zypraxa. I told fiction they need to crush it up for him.

What is stressful is he was fairly functional for bring 86 prior to surgery. He has some anger issues and memory loss but not to such a magnified level. I am unsure what to do next.

my father was in ICU after a hip surgery because he had to be on a breathing tube. prior to his fall he was on oxygen at night. we saw that him being off oxygen caused some confusion. when we got him out of the ice we found out that he had some broken ribs that the ice did not catch. they put him on an anti psychotic drug (small amount) that got rid of the belligerence and brought my father back. I'm not sure how antipsychotics are used in rehab. good luck.

Any type of surgery that requires anesthesia could cause some issues with one's memory, more so if that person already has Alzheimer's/dementia. Then with all the set backs your Dad had after surgery, no wonder he is confused. And being angry would be normal as he is probably very frustrated that he's not healing as quickly as he thought. It could take months for your Dad to recover from this type of surgery, or any surgery where one is under for quite some time.

Anesthesia can be like poison to an elderly person. Especially if that person has memory issues or dementia. Your dad may have a new normal.

Check and see what meds they are giving them. My mom has dimentia and broke a hip. They did a spinal and partial replacement. The morphine was making her crazy. Then they tried darvoset we had to almost beg them to try extra strength Tylenol. Dimentia patients cannot tolerate every med the drs throw at them. Even antibiotics make her loopy. Sleeping pills were horrible experience to.. Please monitor his meds.
