Ask the family to buy a locked medicine dispenser. (google it) Someone sets it up with the meds and it has 28 slots. So, if meds are taken once a day, it would last 4 weeks. If they take meds 4 times a day, it would be good for a week. You program the dispenser (according to directions). When the person is supposed to take their meds, a buzzer goes off and the person opens the slot and the meds are there to take. IF the slot is opened in a certain amount of time (up to an hour) the meds remain locked in the dispenser.
We use a geriatric guardian pharmacy that charges $25 a month to put the pills in blister packs and it does not matter how many times in a day they are to be dosed, it's still $25 - including shipping to her assisted living.
Try to find a pharmacy that uses blister packs for medications. They can blister pack time intervals meaning if there is a med given 2 or 3 times a day, they dispense them that way. I had a few patients that used this and I thought it was great. If the person is on insulin that may be more complicated. Someone can prefill syringes for a week?
