My mother has been living with us, well now with me and my son for 5years she is now 93 in a wheelchair because she had a stroke last year. She gets these crying episodes every so often that puts everyone on edge , she continues to say that they killed my son or someone is beating him up. I continue to reassure her that it’s all a lie and not to believe those voices she hears. I give her a stress pill “Ollie” to calm her. Any advice?

As others below tell you, this is very common behavior and it sounds as though you are handling it well. There really is no arguing or explaining to a demented mind. Try to divert her attention with old photos, scrapbooks, dolls, whatever works.

Stroke often causes emotional lability. Sometimes they cry for no discernible reason. Add that to dementia with its paranoia and inability to think, reason, understand, etc. and you've got a big problem on your hands. I don't know what an Ollie is, but if it's a holistic herbal supplement, you might need stronger meds that are medically proven to work.

I hope you'll pursue the right medication for her. It must be awful to feel as she feels, to hear scary voices, and to think her child is in danger. She is suffering, and the right meds could stop it.

Yes. Call moms doctor to discuss these crying jags and delusions she's suffering from. In your profile, you say she suffers from dementia. With dementia at play, these types of delusions are quite common. Does the "Ollie" medication calm her down? If not, it may need to be changed or increased. Reassure her your son is fine and divert her attention away from what she's obsessing about. A snack sometimes helps, it did with my mother.

Best of luck
