Could anyone tell me what exactly an emergency detention order is and how that is handled?

So glad you have a lawyer. Just a suggestion, did he mentioned an emergency detention order? If so, then don't feel embarrassed to ask the meaning of something if you r not sure what it is. You are paying him for his knowledge. I doubt if you are the only one who has asked this question. Please keep us informed about what happens.

It's a 72 hour hold for stabilization, evaluation and medication monitoring. If during the evaluation process the patient threatens self harm or harm to others, there may be a court hearing to determine if there needs to be a further involuntary admission or referral to another facility. At discharge there should be a discharge plan in place for further treatment or perhaps a monitored housing referral.

It sounds like progress, anyway. Though I'm not so sure about a lawyer who talks nineteen to the dozen and doesn't explain...

I expect the idea is to make sure your mother gets properly assessed in a way that won't allow her to "showtime" or pull the wool over anyone's eyes; and it does seem a good plan.

But don't let yourself be bullied or rushed into decisions, will you?

We have a niece with schizophrenia. I have had to use this process multiple times when she was off her meds and became a danger to self and others. In my state, it requires 2 individuals willing to sign and attend court stating that she is a danger to self and others. Once the paperwork is signed, the police pick her up and transport to a facility. They will do the 72 hour observation and administer meds if they
 Doctor feels appropriate. A court appearance is then scheduled and attended by a doctor or representative from the facility, the person being observed, and the 2 persons filing the original order. The judge then determines if the person needs additional time for meds to be regulated. This had been the process for us. I know your situation is different, hope it at least helps a bit.

In most states, a person can be subject to an involuntary psychiatric hospitalization, but only for 72 hours. It some places, it's called "Baker Act".
