I am not clear how the system works if a person has been back to the hospital during some of that time. Is the time that a person was in a hospital simply deducted for the overall stay?

When your mom was in the hospital, did you discharge her from the SNF or were they holding her room? I think you need to talk to the admin staff at the SNF to determine what she has left.
Thanks for your reply. Her room was held and SN was paid by us for a October hospital stay for rectal bleeding. The broken femurs happened the end of August. We had paid the whole August bill not knowing she would be dropped. The person at SN in charge of this is on maternity leave and her temporary replacement doesn't seem to know a great deal but your explanation helps. They have started her on a wound vac machine so that is promising. It seems that the SN staff was very annoyed with the infectious disease doctor and his total dismissal of a hopeless situation.
