Going to court to get conservatorship over mother who has dementia but not bad enough to go into nursing home yet?

Consult with your mother's doctor and other health professionals about her needs. As conservator (or legal guardian), that person has to make sure that the ward is getting appropriate personal care and that her needs (financial, legal, medical, etc.) are being met. Depending on your mother's stage, she might be ok for the timebeing to have part-time, in-home care by outside services. Eventually that will likely ramp up. I recently was granted legal guardianship of my mother and the judge was/is very particular about what the doctor says my mother's needs are and what the doctor's orders are. My mother, though fairly high functioning verbally, happens to need 24/7 supervision and is in a very wonderful memory-care residence. It is not feasible for her to live in my home with my family and I could not have moved in with her in her house, which is now being prepared for sale to help pay for her care, as per the courts (and certainly I'm on board with that).

Can you tell me how to find a wonderful memory care residence - either medicaid or not expensive? When I ask the facilities they seem to be very vague about how the care is different for this issue of dementia.

depending on where you live, you can expect to spend around $5,000 a month for a memory-care residence, give or take a $1,000 or more. if you can swing it, it is so worth it. my mother is safe, secure and kept active enough physically and mentally that i just marvel daily when i read through the posts of people who are living with and caring for their loved ones in their own homes. i could not do it without losing my mind and my own family.
