Mom just had a stroke in March. Was in an acute care hospital after 2 weeks was moved to a snf. She can't speak and no use of right side. Not sure what to expect for her recovery process. Therapy sessions have been hit or miss with some resistance are we expecting too much to soon? Mom is 85 and up until now been pretty healthy... Thyroid pill and B P meds. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Experts used to say that stroke recovery stopped after just a few months. They now know that recovery can continue almost indefintely but does require extreme effort and working at it long-term. Probably age and determination/motivation play a role in recovery as well, just like with most traumas.

It really hasn't been very long given the severity of the stroke. It may take more time to see improvement. And lots of therapy. My own mother's insurance didn't cover therapy for long and after she got home, the therapy pretty much stopped. Medicare doesn't cover much once they leave rehab.

You might check out the American Stroke Association and related societies and foundations. I found there was a lot of general information on stroke "out there" but it took some persistence to find anyting specific to Mom's situation. Ask her doctors lots of questions now while you have the chance.

When you say "some resistence" do you mean she is not motivated? Did the stroke occur in her frontal lobe? That area controls motivation and initiative and may have been damaged. If her right side is paralyzed, the stroke was on the left, so that area may not be damaged. It is worth asking the doctors what brain regions were affected.

You are expecting a lot of her and of yourself. One day at a time, one step at a time. Visit her and encourage her therapy, but do not promise a homecoming in return for progress. Only time will tell if this is possible.
