I started looking around for a very small micro community for my mom. I came across private homes (6 packs) for rent. You can rent a shared room or a private (more expensive). There are usually 6 residents and 2 caretakers around the clock. They give medicine, make 3 meals, play music, tv, clean and dress your loved one. You may visit almost anytime, take mom out for lunch, outings, weekend, when you want. Mom's place seems to have 2 houses under their LLC, so the caretakes switch off between them once in awhile. Aunts place, they always have the same two people, except on their days off. They are very kind. I go unannounced a few times a week. Sometimes I stay awhile. Last week, I needed a break and fell asleep on the couch next to aunt. I think I was out for an hour. Woke up when they started bringing everyone to the table for dinner. They offered to feed me too...

Many people in our area make a career of taking in developementally disabled adults. the homes are closely supervised by the county and have to follow strict rules. Each resident usually has a small room and use of a common space with TV etc. They are picked up each day to go to a daycare and often help with tasks around the home. the caregiver does all the care but has regular days off when a relief comes in also employed by the county. many are elderly and will remain till their death. The homes I have visited have been very pleasant places with a homely atmosphere. often there are children in the home and accept the residents as family. When there is a vacancy the caregiver has a choice of a new resident. they will visit and share a family meal and the caregiver can observe the interaction with the current residents and decide if the visitor will be a good fit in the home. These are frequently people who either have no relatives or those that can not or are unwilling to care for them. The only common denominator is that they must be developementally disabled. You often meet them out shopping in a group most often in the grocery store. the caregivers are required to make sure their charges recieve excellent medical care and have no discretion about that. Mostly provided by medicaid. i know there are similar homes that take in the elderly but i don't know how well they are supervised. kind of like foster care for the elderly.

It does sound like a great idea, sort like a small college dorm without all the noise :)

Question, are the same 2 Caregivers on call 24 hours, or are there 4 to 6 Caregivers on 8-hour or 12-hour shifts? That seems like a lot of work for the Caregivers getting everyone up plus making breakfast, lunch, dinner, and also be the cruise director. Is someone else employed to clean and do laundry?
