Every thing bothers her! Lace, embroidery, seams, most fabrics. There is no pleasing her, especially at night. It is a nightly battle, and I have thrown away many gowns in frustration. Her skin is so sensitive, she can't bear anything. I used to be a SPED teacher, and thought I could just look up clothing for those with Autism, who often have the same issues. But, all the clothing was for children! Any ideas?
Been trying to remind myself to use skin lotion which does help me, don't know if that would work for your Mom. I had to try many different brands before I found one that I liked.
I wouldn't buy many things at once, though. You don't want a lot of things she won't wear. It may be that she has some neuropathy going on, so that even the softest of things will hurt.
Some of the fabrics with which I used to sew weren't comfortable or soft at all, nothing like cotton.
I would try to find 100% cotton fabrics, although I don't know if they're even made any more. Even then, I'd wash them a few times before giving them to her to wear.
Jessie's right; brushed cotton is soft. Flannel is if it's not a synthetic blend, but some of the blends feel like soft cardboard.
If you sew, you might try looking for 100% flannels and cottons.
Have you tried Carole Hochman at all? She makes some really nice soft cotton nighties and I feel like they don't use as much trim or lace edges as Eileen West (also very soft cottons but more lacey trim.) The "Signature" line is usually all cotton. Also sometimes Macy's Charter Club has very simple cotton nighties without lace -- just soft jersey with t-shirt binding. Those might be more of a summer item though. Vermont Country Store also sells lots of nice cotton nighties and PJs on-line, and they send out a nice printed catalog too.
If socks bother her, the only kind my sock-hating son will wear are the really soft thick socks they sell in Target's ladies dept. this time of year. They are a looser knit and almost feel furry. Normally synthetic are out but for socks he seems happy with these. They have just enough shape to stay on his feet but are not tight at all. He turns them inside out if he gets a pair with pesky seams.
Your poor mom -- she sounds so uncomfortable! You are a very caring daughter to be so understanding of her sensitivities, though. I hope you find something that works for her soon.
