Can a "charity" not remove a person from a mailing list when requested by another?

I helped my father get rid of his junk mail. If there was a phone number I would call and say to take my father off your mailing list. I saved the numbers on my cell phone and when I called. If there was no number I would write remove from mailing list and mail it back. I never had anyone refuse to remove his name. He had over 150 different organizations asking for money. It took me over a year to stop the mailings.

Moecam, I can certainly appreciate that sentiment. I guess I just don't feel that way, and I come by it honestly. My mother has had her name and birthdate engraved in a granite headstone shared with my deceased father for over 30 years. I have had a few conversations with her over the years about that and she swears that it doesn't bother her in the least. She's happy that she got to pick it out. I should be so organized!

So, the other best option for any junk mail is to keep a wastebasket near the door or desk and toss it immediately. That's a popular decluttering tactic as well. Unfortunately, we are entering the season of increased solicitations, both postal and telephone.

When I call to cancel junk mail, I don't even bother to tell them I'm not the recipient. Some people don't know the difference between a man's and a woman's name, so they have no idea I'm calling for my father.

The political junk mail is even worse; it's really offensive.

The reputable legit charities will usually honour your wishes if you can actually make contact with a real person. The scammers don't really care, you might note that some mail is addressed to 'mrs so&so or occupant', after 3 years I still get mail addressed to the previous owner. If you actually have contacted employees that will only allow the addressee to cancel then just pretend to be that person, how can they know?

I guess I am a bit superstitious of writing 'deceased' when they are still alive - I think others are too so it can be something everyone must chose with their own ideals -

These vultures should be stopped but there will always be those who will work hard at scamming others out of their hard earned money - if they worked as hard at a 'regular' job they would make a descent living

I am also doing the DECEASED thing for all the junk mail my late parents are still getting as I had their mail forwarded to my house.

Unless the mail coming to the house has a first class stamp, returning it without opening it it only gets tossed out by the Post Office. Be sure to mark out the tracking code under the address [bar code thingee]. Thus, when I return an envelope I use a first class stamp unless inside there is a postage paid envelope I can use.

napaneedlepoint, do not call an attorney. The cost of buying stamps to use to return all this junk mail is far cheaper then an attorney.

Also try - 'unsolicited mail - return to sender' - they have to pay postage so will stop

Any mail that comes like that, without opening it, write in red marker across the front "DECEASED" and put it in the mailbox at the post office. Another thing you can do is utilize the return envelope, which is usually postage paid by them. Write deceased on the inside mailing and seal it into the return envelope. They have to pay the postage. They will quit wasting their money. I tell people who call on the phone the same thing. Good luck and be patient. As they all buy their mailing lists from companies that specialize in such lists, it may take a while for them to be updated.
