In the state of PA through Medicaid they have a program called "Cash & Counseling". The program gives the person being cared for the option of whom they want to be the caregiver. This can be a family member and they will get paid. I hope this helps you in some way.

The trouble with applying for medical may be that you are related and she has to feed you and provide medical. If you do apply for Medicaid you may qualify
as a household. See if she qualifies for help with IHSS. This could give you both an income and Medicaid.

I don't know but I'm in the same boat. I can't work, cannot get a job because I can't leave her alone. She refuses adamantly to go to ALF. I come from an all Italian family. I am second generation. I am also an only child and let me tell you...."you just don't do that to your mother".....So. That leaves me with the issue of finances (or lack of them)...She has money in the bank. Refuses to pay me. So I can't get help from the gov't, i would think. Just a crappy corner to be stuck in but still trying to put family first and do the right thing by her.

Too bad you don't live in Massachusetts they give free insurance to everyone..

Unfortunately if you become I'll you have to go to ER at that time they will ask you if you have insurance? You say NO and they'll have you sign up for Obama care.. You don't pay when they send you bill because you tell them you have no money!! Next time you go to ER it's the same thing over again...

I learned the hard way about caring for someone (my dad) while not working. Eventually my dad ended up in a nursing home and I was left with....nothing.

I have done the same thing, taking care of my parents in their 80's and 90's, and have no financial help. I too, am taking care of them at home, to keep them OUT of those "facilities", but in doing so, I have NO INCOME...................one would think the government would help out SOME, especially because we're not putting them in those OVERPRICED FALCILITIES ....so the question is................how do I PAY MY OWN BILLS if I can't work......................any suggestions.......................FYI, my parents and I are NOT wealthy people...............please help with some ideas....................thanx

I don't know what type of resources you have or what state you live in. If you have savings, but no paycheck, you are in luck if you live in a state that has Medicaid expansion. Some states, unfortunately, refused to expand Medicaid, so people still had to spend down to qualify. To see what you qualify for, go to healthcare.gov. They will take your information and route you to your state if they are participating in the marketplace.

Lots of us there that will be applying for Medicaid. We care for our parents to keep them out of facilities that will eliminate their money keeping them off of Medicaid you would think there would be help for us, somewhere. But, I haven't found it, let me know if you have success.
