Hi Karen- As a nurse, do you have any medical training? You can be taught the skills, however, will you know what to do if she stops breathing, she vomits or gets mucus caught in the trach? Since you don't give us much information about your education/skills, I don't want to say you can or cannot do this because of the limited information. Give us more please.

Yes you can do it Karen as long as you receive the proper training in the hospital before you bring her home and practice the techniques you have been taught under supervision. If you don't feel confident don't do it. As well as the ventilator can you manage other aspects of her care? do you have back up power if the electricity is out. Can she breath without the ventilator? If you can and want to do it your Mom will really appreciate being at home. you won't be the first to do this at home successfully.

Parents of pediatric patients frequently take their child home with a trach on a ventilator. With the proper training it is definitely possible to take care of your mother at home. It is really a 24/7 obligation. Will you have help and possibly someone to relieve you at night? Someone in this condition frequently needs suctioning every few hours and that will mean you will get very poor sleep at night. You must be in close proximity to your mother to respond to alarms. It will not be easy but it is possible and a very generous thing to have you mother spend her days at home.
