My parents currently have Medicare and Medicaid. Due to their failing health will relocate and live with me and my family. When the move out of state, will they qualify for Medicaid even when living with me?

Yes, Medicaid is available for persons who live "in the community" (that is, not in a care facility). Living with you should not change their eligibility. In fact, Medicaid may pay you something for taking care of them! My mother (94, dementia, mobility issues) now lives with my sister. A Medicaid evaluation determined she was eligible for a certain number of hours of Personal Care Attendant per week. My sister took the training and is now getting paid for those hours. Of course, that is a small percentage of the time she really spends caring for Mom, but Sister says it makes her feel valued and that someone recognizes the effort it takes.

My husband was eligible for a PCA and I opted to have one come into our house and help with him, since I worked from home and needed some help with him.

But I digress. They won't loose Medicaid just because you are kind enough to take them in.

BUT they do have to qualify for Medicaid in your state. Different states do have different eligibility standards. You don't "transfer" your benefits from one state to another -- you have to reapply. Get that process underway as soon as possible.

As Jeanne said, they have to apply for and qualify for Medicaid in the new state.

If they own any Medicaid exempt asset (land, house, car) in the old state, the asset will become NON-EXEMPT in the new state. It will need to be sold with the proceeds used in spend-down. Hopefully you don't have this situation but if you do, I'd suggest contacting a Realtor asap to get the house on the market, etc.
