My mom never had to take meds but has developed some dementia symptoms. She was placed in a nursing home and she is very unhappy. Can’t sleep. Acts out. Cries. Etc. They are giving her meds “to take the edge off” that she refuses. Says they give her crazy dreams. Can they force her to take them?

Thank you! I lost the thread somewhere so I couldn’t reread the responses. I just reread it. I’ve been asking and asking my sister what they give my mom but either she doesn’t know or she doesn’t want me meddling. She’s so mad at me that she says come to the care meeting and ask yourself knowing I’m not in town. And of course the nurses won’t tell me as I’m not the poa. But something they’ve given my mom makes her feel strange and have bad dreams. Or is it her decline? I just don’t know. She’s fine when I visit but everyone tells me it’s an act for me. I find that hard to believe.

Rosie, if you are not satisfied with the answers you got here, find out when the facility’s doctor is there and be there also. Ask him/her what meds your mother is on, why, and what the side effects are. How is she being “forced”?

I think that on the other thread Rosie had mentioned that she doesn't have the POA for health, but that her sister has it. So I am not certain as to whether they would give her that information? It had sounded on that thread that the Sisters were not on the same page regarding their Mom's care, unless I read it wrong.
