My mother 81yr old mother has been taken advantage of by my youngest sister, basically lives off my mothers money spends it however she wants, has my mother in this loop of poor me so my mom will feel sorry for her and let her be in charge of her finances. Over the past 10 yrs she has helped her self to over 500k, my mother has sold everything she owns to keep money in my sisters hands so she will be happy. My mother has no control over her money she leaves it up to my sister to do as she please. Can we get social services or the police involved to investigate her accounts etc.. My sister would trf thousands of dollars from my moms account to her own personal acct and wont tell anyone why, she even had a joint acct with a guy she wasnt married to and we found debt trans in a state where he lived.. Yep long distance releationship if you could call it that? We just need it to stop and get the control of my mothers finances out of my sisters control need advice badly !! Thanks

Someone need to go check in with mom, at least every couple of months. Call Adult Protective Services! They are required by law to investigate. But, if mom is competent, she may tell the investigator that she wants to give sis the money and there is nothing APS can do. If incompetent, it may be a different story. MAY!

What is your mother's cognitive health like? Is she mentally ill? Does she have dementia? If she is in her "right mind" she can do what she wants with her money.

I don't blame you, though, for being concerned. How is Mother going to support herself for the next ten or twenty years?

Call APS. It may or may not change things, but it is a reasonable place to start.

Thanks she had a brain aneurysm and quad by pass surgery. recently and it has effected her memory. We also feel she is slowly develping Alzheimer (her mother had it) She does what ever my younger sister tells her to do. If you ask her a direct question about her finances she turns to my sister to ask her to answer our questions, because she doesn't now anything except what my sister tells her. She lives close 10mi and me and my older sister check in on them twice a week. my two other sisters also are upset at whats going on. I will contact APS and see what they say? thanks for chiming in just so tired of my sister draining her assets and $$.

Ten years and $500K gone, you and a sister check up on your mother 2x weekly? What action have you taken before this? Ten years is a long time for this situation to have gone on.

That would be one of the first questions asked by the police when you report the financial abuse, i.e., why didn't someone report your sister when you first discovered the abuse rather than so late? It's a question you should be prepared to answer b/c the police could be suspicious.
