If you are indigent, you will qualify for Medicaid. In some states Medicaid pays family members a small amount to care for patients.

Mark, the majority of us caregivers here do not get paid for taking care of a love one... unless that love one can pay from their own pocket. If yes, then you would need to draw up an employment agreement which will be important for later down the road if Medicaid is needed.

You would also check with Medicaid [different from Medicare] to see if you could apply and be accepted. At one time a spouse could not be paid, I don't know if that still stands, each State is different on their requirements and programs.
