Paying for their funerals is a perfectly legitimate use of your parents' assets, Douglas, if that's the question. Would you like to say a little more about the situation?

Can I "spend down" MY assets to pay for them?

Ah.

Um. You could call Medicaid and ask? I'm less confident that this would be an accepted use, but on the other hand I can't imagine it's a common ruse for divesting funds so perhaps they will look on it sympathetically.

Douglas, is it YOU who is trying to qualify for Medicaid?

I think one of the best ways to spend down is to engage a really experienced certified Eldercare attorney.

I THINK that paying for your parents' funerals would be looked upon as gifting.
