My mom is in a nursing home and she has full blown dementia. She has also recently had a bout with pneumonia and had stopped eating, A few months ago she had a urinary tract infection. When she stopped eating the nursing home sent her to a hospital where the equipped her with a feeding tube. She also is no longer able to communicate verbally with anyone. It seems she just keeps getting sick and sicker all the time. My issue is this She has no money left, the nursing home has taken it all for her care. I have no money because i am on a fixed income. If she were to pass away how am I supposed to bury her or pay for her funeral expenses? That's why I need to know if i can legally buy the insurance for her even tho she can't give me permission verbally to do it.

Find Care & Housing
I'm so sorry for your financial situation. Many of us have seen every penny of our elders' money go to their care, but that's what it's for. Still, it's hard on everyone.

I imagine (but don't know) that you could legally buy the insurance, but I really doubt that any company would give you a policy on her. She is clearly close to death, so they know that they'd have to pay out.

Talk with the Medicaid people about burial. They have seen this situation before.
Good luck,
Carol

Alexis - you can buy insurance on anybody or anything and be the owner and beneficiary of the policy, IF YOU CAN FIND ONE. It's really like what Carol said, if she is really end stage of life, she will not qualify for a policy as you have to disclose her current age and health status. If you leave something out, and she dies within a short period of time or a couple of years, then it's likely the policy will be viewed as invalid because of non-disclosure and you will not get any of the payments made back either.

You might want to start looking into cremation services as they are much cheaper.

I agree...our parents should be using any money they have on their care. My parents who are by no means wealthy..did go ahead and purchase their funerals ahead of time which will make it easy for us. They have not yet had to use nursing homes, but that still might happen down the road. I'm not sure what's available out there for those who cannot afford a burial...which I'm sure there are lots of folks in this situation.

Thank you Igloo572, I already know about the creamation thingy because we had my father cremated when he passed away but mother spent about 2 years even paying that off. It was then and is now expensive for people like me. I wasn't supposed to be in this alone but my siblings abandoned my mother and left her for me to deal with. I am a burn survivor and i have health expenses of my own and I am on SSI and barely keep my head above water as it is. I don't know how i am supposed to pay my health expenses and then have to pay for my mother's stuff as well and if she dies anytime soon I don't know how I am going to come up with even a cent to cremate or bury her, either way Im screwed. She came down with dirrahrea two days ago at the nursing home and her temperature blew up to 102.5 and was still climbing this morning when I spoke to the nurses. They had no choice but to send her to the ER.... again for the umteenth time in a month. The nurse said it doesn't look good for my mother. I am scared and Im tired. I don't know what to do.
