Here is one thing to think about if one is trying to decide whether to quit work to care for an aging parent.... on average if a working person quits work he/she will lose over the years between $285,000 and $325,000 which includes loss of salary, plus net worth loss of the health insurance, loss of pension, loss of other benefits such as matching 401k, etc. [source: Reuters 5/30/12]

You need to ask yourself if you can afford to lose that much. Some forget that they would need to get private health insurance which is very expensive. Plus if you do happen to live in a State where Medicaid might pay you to caregive for your Mom, you might not qualify if you and your Mom are living together under the same roof.

You and your mother could write up a contract saying that you will be her caretaker doing certain things and being paid so much per month. That's about the only way anyone is going to pay you.

Does your mother have the fund to afford some CNAs to be her caregivers who do that for a living so you can go back to full time work?

Laws about paying family caregivers differ depending on what state you are in. The laws are put into place to prevent hiding or spending down of funds in case of future need for Medicaid. To be paid, if your state permits it you need a care agreement. It does not need to be formalized by an attorney. But, you would be much safer with one in place.
