My mother and father have a burial insurance policy for 6k each. It is paid from my father’s SSI check directly each month. If they both have to get on Medicaid to go to the nursing home, can this policy continue be paid somehow from their SSI or retirement checks? My mom gets $500 SSI and my dad gets 1600 plus a $300 retirement check.

Medicaid will most likely require the policies, if whole life, be surrendered for the cash value. If on Medicaid and there are assets to spend down, prepaid funeral expenses can be made. Policy premiums cannot be paid out of pensions, SSI, etc. That money goes to nursing home to pay patients share of cost.

I'll take a stab at this one. I would first be more concerned about their eligibility for Medicaid. That's worth a whole lot more than the burial insurance policy. Some elder care attorneys give free consultations; you might call around in your area/city to get started on the spend-down information gathering phase of Medicaid eligibility for both Mom and Dad.
