I live in the State of Maryland, it might make a difference on where your mother lives. My father was in a nursing home and my mother was still living in the home. The law here is that the spouse has to have a place to live, and as long as they are still living in the home they can not make you sell the house. They could however if both husband and wife are in the nursing home. Also, If it is the primary residence they can not, but if they own a vacation home they may be able to make them sell that. Again, it probably would have something to do with where your parents reside.
