How should I calculate the amount of room and board to charge my father-in-law for staying with us?

In this case, the house is mine and the statement was to show that mom is "renting" from me. I found a generic rental agreement on the Internet and filled in the blanks. Her POA signed it (my brother).

Robert888 - If you are renting, I suppose you could use your lease or rental agreement, but that shows what the whole household pays and probably doesn't include, utilities, phone and cable. If you need a document showing your parent's part, I would do a separate one that is between you and them and is the correct percentage of all the living expenses.

I'd like to know also. I guess one could do a survey of renting a room in the area. There must be some "industry-guideline" that guardians use, or the state, etc. Anybody know? Does anybody actually "account" for rent from their parents?

I had to provide a rent statement when we applied for Medicaid for my mom (she lives with me). Direction I got from both the county social worker and someone in the local social security office is that we could set rent at 1/3 of household expenses - because there are 3 adults living in the house. Household expenses includes the mortgage, property taxes, and utilities.

Of course, after meeting her Medicaid spend down every month, there isn't any money left for her to pay any rent, but that's another story!

Hi JulieWI. Isn't it crazy. Actually, my dad's social security wouldn't cover much, but anyway... Question - what do you mean by rent statement? For example, the check I send to the landlord? Or some other receipt of some sort showing how much we pay in rent?
