Dad had a fall in AL and was hospitalized. While there his lower denture cracked in half. He is currently in subacute rehab and I plan on moving him to a memory care when he is discharged from there. He has had memory issues that have progressed over time and in the past few months the loss has accelerated; since the hospital he has taken another giant step down both in mentation and physical abilities. He very much dislikes the pureed diet he is on now (said the pureed peas "were too ugly to eat" lol) and I am seeing this as a quality of life issue for him. Previous dentist won't repair this denture as they repaired the previous break but they did not make the original denture and no longer repair what they did not make. Any insights as to how to go about getting a new denture for someone who can not tolerate a trip in to a dentist office?

Judy work with the staff to find a compromise diet plan, since the need to modify isn't related to swallowing issues he should be able to handle many foods without any changes at all, and even meats and tougher vegetables could be served minced rather than pureed - there was a fellow at my mom's nursing home with no teeth at all who ate a full standard diet.

He is on pureed food now because that lower denture broke but just a week ago he was eating a regular diet. Otherwise he can handle a standard diet. He is eating far less now because the purees just don't appeal to him. There has been a sea change in his functional abilities just from the previous week with no medical explanation found. As he is in subacute rehab he can't leave the facility for fittings, etc. I'd like for him to have some small bit of enjoyment in life and we are now down to food.

Let us start with pureed food. Is he allowed solids? If not, then a denture is not needed. As you know, dentures take a few visits and some tooling . You can call around to determine if someone can visit him. Otherwise he will have to deal with soft foods if that is allowed.

Find a denturist not a dentist, it shouldn't be too difficult to "weld" them back together.

Thank you so much! I had never heard of this but it turns out there is someone just a few miles away!
