My 94 year old Mom keeps asking me if she could have a dog and she can't for several reasons. Since Mother's Day is not far away I placed an order for a Therapy Robotic Dog.

My Mom's dementia is not advanced so she will know it's not a real dog. I don't know what to tell her when I give it to her? Do I tell her it's a toy dog? She's not stupid. Even so, I think she will really like it from what I read about this pet.

Anyone have experience with these therapy robotic pets?

Thanks, Jenna

What kind did you get her? Some of them look kind of creepy. EDIT: Oh, that one is cute. I bet she'll like it.

I've seen great success with robotic animals in a MC unit. One lady had always kept cats & after lunch the staff would place the toy cat on her lap & she settled for a nap. It purred when patted & still. Others were offered a puppy or cat to pat/hold when the lifestyle lady visited. Most residents there had mod-adv dementia I suppose. One sweet lady whispered to me she knew it was a toy but she still liked it. I whispered back that I did too!

I'd be honest with your Mother & say I know you'd like a real dog, but it is very hard right now (with that bad virus going around) but I was hoping this little friend would by give you a smile.

My Gran just loved dolls & had names for them. No dementia at all just imaginative & not afraid to show it. Even the fireside china dogs had names. I think she would have played along & named a little robotic dog straight away & decided when it was time for Doggy to sit on her lap for some pats.

I hope it is a winner. If not, she may enjoys it in the future.

Thanks for your input! We have a cat already and my Mom is a dog person. I do think she will truly enjoy this therapy dog.

I'll be honest with her because she knows when I'm not.

Update: Gave the therapy dog to my Mom on Mother's Day and she loves it! Everyday she talks to him, pets him, etc. I highly recommend this therapy dog or cat.

It depends on the person. I hope she’ll like it. It sounds like fun. I got my LO a very lifelike cat that appeared to breathe like a real cat, but, my LO, who knew what it was, didn’t like it. She hid it in a drawer and would ignore it when I took it out. I never understood why.
