if health insurance was not tied to jobs, but was something that you could buy on your own like auto insurance, and the cost was regulated. i could go for that. tying health insurance to a job was never a smart idea.

This is why I believe until we get to where we have affordable health insurance for all, we need a special program so that caregivers receive insurance benefits with the opportunity to buy in when their caregiving is finished. Going without your own diabetes care is not going to be a good thing, your mom and dad could easily find themselves without a caregiver!! Are there any free clinics in town? If you we're in Central or NW Arkansas I would be able to suggest a couple.

Are Mom and/or Dad on Medicaid? If they qualify for in-home help and you qualify to give it, you could get paid. Not a high salary but better than nothing.

I would start by calling Social Services in your county and asking for a needs assessment. They are familiar with not what the county offers but also other resources in your community. They hooked me up with respite volunteers, for example, and recommended that I apply for Medicaid for my husband who had dementia. We used Medicaid's Elderly Waiver program, designed to help seniors stay in the community rather than go to a nursing home. If this is a stone you've left unturned because you thought it was only for nursing home help, I urge you to call Social Services and find out what is really available to your parents.
