Loved one is bed bound and has dementia and she suffers from Sundowners on top of that. She rarely sleeps at night, gets very agitated. She calls for me several times an hour for mostly nothing but things she imagines. Like removing a non existent picture from a shelf. It can be upwards of every 5 minutes and gets exhausting and frustrating at night. My question is: is it okay ignore her for awhile as long as I know she’s dry, warm and safe? Thank you for any advice you can provide. I’m starting to lose my mind.

Call her doctor and get her on meds. The agitation and lack of sleep can have horrendous consequences for her.

I second the idea of medication. My mom was given mirtazapine to help her (and me) sleep through the night and it was a miracle drug for us, better sleep at night made mom more like herself during the day too. Your mom might not benefit from the same medication but hopefully there is something available to give you both some relief.

I agree with the above suggestions about medication. Regular agitation and regular lack of sleep can exacerbate the dementia.

I forgot to mention that she takes Ativan 30 minutes before bedtime. I don’t notice any difference in her mood with it. It’s supposed to calm her down and help with sleep according to her doctor. I don’t see any difference with or without it.

Call the doctor and tell her/him that the Ativan isn't making a difference.

Yeah, ativan had absolutely no noticeable effect on my mother either. Time to try something else.
