Can the assisted living facility be held responsible for stolen jewelry?

My jewelry was stolen from my room out of a locked box while I was hospitalized and my room was left unsecured for three days during my hospital stay

I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you are feeling better now. It must be awful to come home and find insult added to injury with your things missing.
I would look at your contract and see what it says about theft. I know most hospitals and NH suggest not to bring things of value. Perhaps call the police and make a report and for sure alert the office of your building that there is a thief among those having access to the property.
Would you have photos of your jewelry? That might be helpful.
Perhaps others will come along with better suggestions.
