Find Care & Housing
Very common problem. My folks have both been told to exercise, will help them sleep better, alleviate aches & pains, etc. But I just can't be driving them around that often. So they have an exercise bike by their TV. Do they use it? Hardly. Its a matter of how much energy can I expend, to keep them "heAlthy" but if it means sacrificing my own "health" I have to draw the line.
So no, I'm not going to drive them 3-5x a week to the YMCA. They won't take the Ride sevice or a taxi either. I wish they would!

Transportation is a serious challenge in most communities. When a handicap transportation service is available, that is very welcome, but I found that "reliable" did not extend to arrival time. To get to an appointment at 9:30 my husband had to be ready to be picked up anytime between 8 and 8:30, and sometimes the van was later than 8:30. Then there may have been an hour of riding the bus as other passengers were picked up (even though the destination was 20 minutes away.) My brother had to go some distance to see his psychiatrist and he could not rely on getting there on time. His doctor refused to see him if he was late. :(

I don't mean to discourage you. Sometimes it works out fine. One of the caregivers in my support group came by senior transportation -- she often had to leave early to be ready to get the van, but at least she got to and from the meetings. Check out what is available in your area. It is definitely worth a try!

My husband could take his mobility scooter to the nearby exercise classes, while he was still competent to drive that.

Most Senior Centers have classes and the Cape Coral Mini-Bus has transportation for the disadvantaged.
