Once on Medicaide, the resident or patient's premium for Medicare is often paid by Medicaide. Once you find an assisted living center that will accept medicaide, to talk with their business office to find out just exactly how this process and payment works. They want the money so they understand it in detail.
Medicare will pay for up to 120 days of care in a nursing home if the patient is making progress to return home or to return to assisted living. If the doctor determines that the patient is NOT making any progress, then medicare will cease and other payment must be made.
Best of luck
The path of least resistance is Googling everything, from "assisted living and Medicare" to sitting by the phone waiting for the answers to come to you. Like it or not, there's footwork to be done. It's better if you hear it from the horse's mouth, so visit your local Administration on Aging and Medicare offices for assistance.

If one moves into a nursing home for skilled nursing care and has very limited funds (I'm not sure of the amount and there is a "5 years look-back" policy of finances to be sure that the patients haven't gifted money or is hiding assets) THEN MEDICAID will kick in and pay for a nursing home.
