My spouse is 61 yo, and has been diagnosed with early staged alzheimers disease. His disease process has progressed rapidly, and the doctor states he is in the later stage (stage 4) of dementia. Since he is only 61 years old, he only qualifies for SS Disability, which he is getting. But is there a difference in the in-home care benefits that he may qualify for?

Find Care & Housing
No, no difference. Medicare only pays for intermittent care. In Home care has to ordered by a doctor. Its usually just for PT and OT, maybe wound care? As soon as the person has hit the milestones needed, they are discharged. Its only temporary and the nurse or therapist is only there long enough to do what the doctor ordered. Medicare is only for health and rehab. If you need an aide, thats out of pocket or you sign up for Medicaid in home.

Also contact the Alzheimer’s Association in your area.

The is a conversation with a social worker for your county or if he has an existing caseworker. Benefits can vary a lot by state and county.

It may be helpful for you to consult with a certified elder law attorney who is knowledgeable about Medicaid.

You can also contact your local Area Agency on Aging for resources.

Call 2-1-1 (run by the UnitedWay) for information on other resources and services.
