Yes, custom made smoothies at home, with ingredients to improve cognitive function are expensive, but you don't need a lot, or even a full glass. Getting suggestions from AC has helped. The coconut oil is not yet the miracle cure, however the benefits of shiny fingernails is a real plus when nails and skin have been neglected. We just started 5Htp, Curcumin, Inositol, added to the highly digestible powder (Maca) to the smoothie we share, add crushed fine ice to increase the volume.

I assume you are using them because you need the calories they provide. When drinks like ensure first came on the market they were sold as nutritional supplements for those who couldn't get enough nutrients through a regular diet, today they are marketed as a great addition to the average diet. It's obvious with the obesity problem in most developed counties that kind of spin is aimed more at increasing the companies bottom line than for any real need.
My mom uses ensure plus for the extra calories, we've tried some of the others and they give her indigestion. I generally just watch for sales and stock up.
If you are willing to try homemade smoothies you could invest in a good blender and search the forum for recipe ideas, I know I've read about some good ideas here. You can even use the nutritional drinks as part of your smoothies, getting the best of both and stretching out the costs.

Are those nutritional drinks really worth it? I saw how expensive they were, and all the ingredients in them. Nice to have the vitamins, but if someone is already taking vitamin pills, the nutritional drink isn't going to help to add more vitamins than the body will use... the rest gets wasted.

Is the person drinking the nutritional drinks because they like the taste? If yes, why not try Instant Carnation Breakfast mix drink... you add the packet to milk. probably less expensive per glass.
