From your experience, what antipsychotic medications have caused tardive dyskinesia or meige syndrome?

Find Care & Housing
From ChatGPT:

1. Highest Risk: First-Generation (Typical) Antipsychotics
(These have the greatest association with TD, especially with long-term use):

Haloperidol (Haldol)
Fluphenazine (Prolixin)
Chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
Perphenazine

These strongly block dopamine and are the classic cause of TD.

2. Lower (but still real) Risk: Second-Generation (Atypical) Antipsychotics
(These are more commonly prescribed today and generally have lower TD risk, but it’s not zero):

Risperidone (Risperdal)
Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
Quetiapine (Seroquel) (lower risk than many others)
Aripiprazole (Abilify) (partial dopamine agonist—still possible)
Ziprasidone (Geodon)
Clozapine (Clozaril) (lowest TD risk among antipsychotics)

3. Other Medications (less obvious but important). Some non-antipsychotic drugs that affect dopamine can also cause TD:

Metoclopramide (used for nausea/GERD)
Prochlorperazine

These are actually a common overlooked cause, especially with long-term use."

My mom's psych meds have caused her to develop a tremor in her lip and tongue. When she had a stomach bug and couldn't keep the meds down I noticed it went away for a bit. She is on psych meds including Rivastigmine and Aripiprazole.
