Stan read the article above about veterans. Your father would need to apply for Aid & Attendance. There are maximums and a wait period to get approved. It will not be pay for 24 hours per day and will be income you must declare.
Thank you for your replies. I would like to work but since Dad has ALZ, I need to be with him almost all day and night. The VA told me to apply for VA assistance so that we could afford to pay for home bound care / caregiver when I need to travel. He lived in San Diego and I moved him to FL a couple of months ago and still need to go back there to sell his house. I was told by the VA over the phone that I could be paid for being the caregiver rather than hire someone, but do not know if this is correct. Dad joined the Navy at 17, fought in WW2, then went to USNA, then UDT /SEAL Team 3, Sub Commander, etc., retired after 26 years, honorable discharge and is 93. His sisters lived til 99 and 101 so he may be around a few more years. BTW, smokes pipes, drinks Jack, no medications ever, eats anything, never exercised, and only has long term memory. I would like to find out if I can receive any type of Caregiver assistance. Is there also a limit on how much financial assets he can have to qualify such as cash or home equity? Thanks.

Medicaid typically has a limit of $2000 in bank and one house and car with a limit set by the state the person lives in (you don't say where you are). The VA has a specific set of rules about income, type of disability, type of pension sought and whether you are trying to pay for a veteran that saw "active service" based on specific dates of service and discharge.
