If my mom, age 78, misses more than a couple of days, we see her speech and short-term memory decline rapidly. My mom says the meds (Namenda and Excelon Patch) make her spacey, less energetic, blah feelings, etc. -- and says when she misses a couple of doses she feels much better with tons of energy. But my sister and I see her go downhill with her memory, speech, etc. if she misses more than 2 doses of these meds. Any ideas? Thank you so much.

Many persons dislike how Meds change how they feel. My bipolar brother swore that he was great off his Meds as he spent $5k in a weekend and fought with cops at traffic stop. The neurological Meds smooth out highs and reduce the anxiety. Changing how you think is scary even if helpful. In dementia the brain is broken and not evaluating best.

A rational adult can weigh the negative side effects of a medication against the benefits. Unfortunately when the meds are to correct neuro and cognitive issues the patient can only feel the side effects as they are unaware of their own problem behaviours. If you know they are working perhaps the timing or dosage can be adjusted to lessen the side effects, talk it over with the doctor.
