You apply for Medicaid. Nursing home care costs minimally 8K per month in most states.

No such thing for $2500./month.

In San Diego County, California, even the board and care places charge $3500.+ for memory care.

You can apply for Medicaid for her BUT she can't have more than $2000. in the bank or make more than a certain amount per month (on Social Security). My mom makes $1800./month and she doesn't qualify. She also has a couple thousand dollars more in the bank, which puts her over the limit.

We live in Tijuana, México (I work in San Diego, Cal.) and had to look for a place for her here. I don't make much working 22 hours a week and can't help her out financially. We found a place here that she can afford on her SS.

You can't "give" any $ your mom has away (like to family) because Medicaid checks back 5 years.

You apply for Medicaid. The program will use all mom's money for her care, make up the difference and mom will receive a small monthly stipend for expense like hair dresser, etc.

She is going to need financial assistance.

I suggest you start by getting a needs assessment done. Call her county Human Services Department and ask for an appointment. Be there with Mom when she is interviewed.

The person doing the assessment can verify that Mom needs a nursing home or some other level of care, and identify options for qualifying for financial aid to cover it. If Mom has $2500 income per month she is probably over the limit for Medicaid, but there are legitimate ways to work around that. Don't give up!
