my aunt is 88 and had recently been in a rehab center for almost 2 months due to a hip fracture. my cousin was there the night before she was discharged to home and he said she was very lucid and had a great conversation with her. the nursing home people told him she could walk about 70 steps with assistance. when she came home that friday and he saw her, she couldn't walk at all and needed much assistance to rise. she mumbles and speaks very softly. he is wondering why the abrupt change in her. she does have alzheimmer's but could there be this abrupt change? she does live with the oldest son and his girlfriend and I hate to say what I;m thinking is going on.

Dementia does have ups and downs. It is possible for the patient to be lucid one day and confused the next. (This is especially pronounced in Lewy Body Dementia, but I understand it can happen in any kind of dementia.)

She also could have been "showtiming" at the rehab center -- putting forth great effort to act in a manner that would get her released, and then becoming worn out from that effort when she gets home.

Those are possibilities. What do you suspect is going on? Do you have any evidence for your suspicions?

don't have any evidence...thought they might be drugging her because of comments the son made to me years ago..I really don;t think they are caring people that are taking care of her and I think they put their best foot forward when the younger son comes to visit as he is their support to an extent..neither works so I dpn;t know where their money comes to live on..they live in her house..I believe she pays all the bills, etc
