I was just curious if someone could give me some feedback on this situation. My Mom, who is 92, has leg swelling from the knees on down to her feet. We went to the doctor (PA) and he did bloodwork and has her wearing compression stockings. My question is that he never really said what the cause of this is or what will happen in the future. The results of the bloodwork said she was anemic and that her kidneys are good. She is not out of breath or experiencing any heart issues. If the compression stockings don't work he will try a diuretic. As far as anything else she is in great shape, mind is good, and takes no medication. If anyone has had this situation I would be curious to know. She currently has started to use a walker and is living on one floor. Up until last month, she was completely mobile and driving. Retention usually caused by heart problems. Like congestive heart failure. Was her heart checked. Mr nephew just found out he has a problem and he is now wearing stockings. He sleeps in a recliner and was told to sleep in a bed. Walk more, he tends to be sedentary. Keep feet elevated.

Yep. Hubby had CHF and his legs would swell so badly the skin was shiny. He wound up in the hospital with a catheter and they drained gallons of fluid out of him. Just as an aside, the therapist at my husband’s rehab said not to use compression hose if the legs were already swollen. It just forces the fluid back up.

Pretty much anyone at the age of 92 is going to have some circulation issues. You didnt say how bad the swelling was or how often . So im assuming its not too bad and the doctor suggested hose instead of a diaretic for a reason . Keep an eye on things and let him know if it doesnt go down or repeats

Thanks for your response. This is the first time it happened and it hasn't subsided. The diaretic was the next form of treatment.

Blood work alone isn't likely to tell them anything. I suggest you do some reading on the web about peripheral edema so you understand the possible causes, then go back to the doctor and ask for an explanation.

Thanks for the response. Her heart was checked and she has been wearing the stockings a couple of days. Thankfully she has a follow-up appointment(physical) shortly.

My dad is 92 and he just started experiencing this. He does not have any heart problems but this last bout of cellulitis has caused edema. The redness has subsided but he has an open wound that is not healing (it has been weeks - he is diabetic) and his leg is swollen. The wound has been draining clear liquid for weeks. They put him on 2 short rounds of Lasix which seemed to help for awhile. Now they have a therapy coming to the house to do lymphadema therapy. They came for the first time yesterday. Not sure where we're going from here. I doubt the heat is helping this much either!

My mom has this issue and her kidneys and heart are good. The Dr. told her to watch her sodium and prop her legs up often. That’s helped a lot.
