The Village at Waveny looks gorgeous. They do a fabulous job of selling their Village, but personalized Memory Care, in fact any care for dementia, is NOT available. They simply don’t have the staff and apparently have no plans to hire more. They have group programming including singing, music, art and field trips, but the programming ends at 4pm every day. Memory impaired patients have nothing planned after dinner. My mother-in-law at 94 was still physically healthy but her significant memory impairment limited her ability to live at home. We placed her at the Village based on the reputation and promises but almost at once were disappointed. Visiting, we found her unsupervised, wandering among other dementia patients alone on the unit. The staff was not available to discuss why this was. During the two months she was a resident there, she fell 3 times, was hospitalized 3 times (once for the fall, 2x because of other medical issues that had been neglected earlier in the day.) After two months we moved her to another local facility (at two thirds the cost of Waveny!) where she hasn’t fallen or been hospitalized even once. At the new place she has personalized care and supervision and most important, caring staff people who have gotten to know her and care about her as a person. Looking for Dementia Care? Until Waveny hires enough staff to actually provide individual care and programming to meet the needs of patients, I wouldn’t send my mother there.
