Pennock Village

My family members have lived at Pennock for over 10 years. The location of Pennock Village is wonderful and it is a very friendly community of elderly people. The average age is about 85 yrs old. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are not designed for senior citizens. The floors are slick vinyl, the tubs are the old step-over kind most seniors don’t dare to use, the shower is tiny and has neither sitting height grab bars nor room for a bench to steady yourself. The toilet is low and tucked into a space that is not easily accessible by people using a walker or wheelchair. The most disappointing thing is that if you take the initiative to spend your own money to make the bathroom safer, you will have to pay for it twice. Spectrum Health, the third largest provider of health care in the nation, owns Pennock Village, and they require you to pay to put the old fixtures back in when you move out. I would prefer to live where the management had better awareness of the needs of seniors when I look for a spot to safely age in place. Pennock is lacking in this.
