FirstLight is a family operated business. We have offices in Daphne and also in Mobile, inside of University Oaks Retirement community.
Our caregivers all go through a rigorous screening process. Before we hire any caregiver, we put them through a national criminal background check; we do a drug screen; a reference check, we check their driving record and we also test them for various traits which are found in good caregivers (CQA-Caregiver Quality Assessment). In addition, we then put them through a 4 hour orientation which covers the basics of care giving.
The great majority (80% or so) of our caregivers are CNAs (certified nursing assistants) and all are experienced. Our caregivers are our employees. So, we cut their taxes and they all have liability insurance and worker's compensation insurance. In other words, unlike those people who chose to pay individuals "under the table" you will not have to worry about the IRS coming after you for failure to withhold FICA taxes. Neither will you have to worry about a caregiver who might get injured in your home looking to you for compensation - as our employee, we provide worker's compensation to them for on the job injuries.
After our caregivers are hired they are offered and incentivized to obtain additional training. Indeed, we have 120 hours of video training we offer, 60 hours devoted to caring for persons with Alzheimers or dementia. We also do routine supervisory visits to ensure that our caregivers are providing the care to which you are entitled.
In addition to all that, FirstLight goes to great lengths to ensure that you are satisfied with our services. We will follow-up with you (and our caregiver) after the very first visit. We then will follow-up the next week and routinely thereafter, We even have contracted with an independent company, Home Care Pulse, which conducts monthly surveys of our clients to ensure that we are meeting needs and expectations.
We try very hard to match each client with a caregiver who they will like as we believe it is important for that caregiver/client bond to exists. However, if for whatever reason a client requests a different caregiver, we will accommodate that request. We also will never send a caregiver to your home (whether its a private residence or a senior community) whom you haven't met before. The first time you meet a new caregiver we also will be there to introduce you to each other.
FirstLight also employs cutting edge technology. We offer a home care portal where a client's loved ones, who may live out of town, can have immediate access to our caregiver's notes over the Internet. Our caregivers also employ this technology when they "clock-in" from the client's phone. If a caregiver has not clocked in within 5 minutes of when the shift was supposed to start, both the client and caregiver will receive a call from us. This allows us to address any issues proactively rather than hours later. And, finally, this technology allows us to accept credit card payments and also bank to bank transfers so payments can be done simply and easily.
