Absolutely horrific! I traveled all the way from CA to check on my Dad at Avamere and I guess I should not be shocked since these places are run on a non-existent budget. Residents are malnourished due to the extreme poor quality of food that is served...and that is if you can get served. Not much choice on meal options, they expect 80 or more people to eat the same food and not everyone has the same tastes. Per SDS they get nearly $10,000 a month per resident, that's about $20,000 per room! Call lights answered in 45 minutes to 90 minutes later. The photos here are misleading; prison like atmosphere to go with the worse than prison food. Year-round flies, fruit flies and insects constantly. Every time there was an issue my father or I had to report, they falsified records and it was always "our" fault. They had some of his diagnosis' and medications wrong, nurses did not follow the care plan and the rehab is practically none existent. If you want to get up and walking to build your strength to be able to go home, you might get a 10-12-minute walk down the halls. Residents have UTI after UTI and you can smell it as soon as you turn the corner to walk down the halls. Instead of treating the UTI and having open conversations. Air freshener is non-existent and feces odors will knock you to the floor and they will say they can't smell it! Even with severe allergies I sure could smell it. For a place that they claim is like home, you can't have anything of your own in the building without it being lost, stolen or damaged by ignorant staff that do not care. Replacement of my father's stolen, lost, damaged items? Forget about it! It will not happen. The DNS will go through your belongings and throw away anything she thinks you should not have in your own room. As for room, try a living space that is smaller than an 8' x 12' bedroom. A closet that is not much bigger than a school locker. And so much for respect, privacy or dignity! You're lucky to see a nurse once a week if even that, and they are forced to work double shifts due to being short staffed. CNA's are constantly bitching because they are being mandated to stay 4 hours over shift and making inappropriate comments around residents or their kin. If you are on the long-term side, double the neglect. My father's friend told us all about it. They will take all your Social Security money say what $30 or so; just how can one afford a monthly haircut, decent deodorant, shampoo or body lotion, cologne (even cheap ones), no money to order take out on occasion like you could when you lived in your own home. They say you have the freedom to come and go, but you are not free expect the police to be called on you. You can't trust what is being put in your family’s chart or records, staff are constantly charting cares that are not being done. Only communicate in writing so they can't twist your words. Be sure to go online and read all the complaints filed and non-compliant reports found by State Compliance Officers.
