How Do You Pay For Assisted Living in New York?

Care in a New York assisted living community is typically paid for by a resident’s private funds (e.g. savings, 401(k), pension, Social Security, etc.), long-term care insurance, and in some cases, VA benefits.

Additionally, New York Medicaid offers an Assisted Living Program for state residents who require nursing home care, but prefer to be in a more social assisted living environment. In order to be eligible for this waiver, applicants must be at least 21 years of age and medically eligible for nursing home care, but their functional ability must be sufficient enough to allow for safe and effective placement in an assisted living facility. A medical assessment is necessary for each applicant wishing to apply for this program. Medicaid eligibility is not necessarily a requirement, but the majority of New Yorkers participating in this program receive Medicaid assistance.
