The Terraces is a beautiful facility in Phoenix where our mother chose to move after our father died. She had a lovely apartment in independent living for several years before the staff insisted it was time that she move to their assisted living known as The Lodge. At that time, Mom's cognitive function was waning, mainly in short-term memory loss. She was still highly functional and had no assistance with daily life. Her move to The Lodge proved difficult in that she suffered from transfer trauma and became depressed and reclusive. Two years later, while still suffering a certain amount of depression but still highly functional in her own care and mobility, Mom resumed a more active life which included art, music, bridge, book club, and current events. discussions. About a year ago, the assisted living management insisted that she move to the Terraces memory care called The Grove. Their reasoning was that Mom was lonely and that she asked for assistance (from the nurses) too much when she didn't feel well as she suffers from headaches. This was shocking as Mom had finally acclimated to The Lodge, was still aware and highly functional in her own care. On examination, the Grove proved unsatisfactory so we declined. With no significant change to her cognitive function or general functionality, and at 95 years old we were told last week that Mom must move to The Grove or "get out" of The Terraces. Others have had the same demand. Like them, we will move elsewhere.
