Cwillie, that's so frustrating!! Yeah sometimes ya just gotta order from Amazon, even if you don't want to.

New phone and case ordered - as much as I hate giving money to Amazon there's no denying you can't find a better price or convenience, even buying directly from Samsung was more $$.

How very frustrating, cw!

I agree, 1 month is not sufficient notice and not transferring the credit is theft.

Hopefully your next provider doesn't play these types of games.

I had a new phone on my list of things to get in the near future but I was hoping to squeak by just a little bit longer. It's the total lack of advance notice that pi$$es me off, it was exactly the same thing last time with a "as you may be aware"... blah blah blah. No, I didn't already know, and one month's notice is completely insufficient.
I already paid for a full year phone plan and had to buy a new SIM card, not to mention they wouldn't honour the credit I had in my account, it feels like they are constantly screwing us over.

Cwillie, we changed our service to Mint Mobile several years ago and can not be happier. We did need to get new phones but, ours were like 8 years old, so no hard feelings. They are a fraction of the cost and we have never had coverage issues.

Worth checking out if you can get an off brand service.

I just got a text from my phone provider that they are shutting down their 3g network in July and even though Samsung says my phone is 4g capable supposedly it is not compatible with their new network. Say what? First they discontinued their pay as you go service and I had to change to one of their satellite companies, now this? And they're only letting me know a month in advance? 🤬

I just read this article about homelessness in the boomer generation because for many the parent is the last safety net. It’s worth a read.

Sorry to hear that, Geaton, hat's quite a combination. R has prostate cancer but nothing else so far, thankfully.

I just found out this morning that our retired Pastor has aggressive prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. He's in his 70s with Parkinsons and mild/mod dementia. He only wants the hormone treatment, no chemo or radiation. There was a post from Fawnby recently that was on this topic. I was hoping to read more people's experiences with their LO and prostate/bone cancer/dementia and pass it on to his wife but that thread is now closed. Please PM me with your journey if you are willing to share insights from your experience with this. Thanks!

On my mind this morning. One of our floor residents came to the door this morning looking for R. Her husband passed on Monday. R has helped them. He was relatively young - early 60s I would say. He has been ill with asbestosis for some years and very ill recently. He didn't want a funeral so she is having a gathering of friends and family here later on. She said she is so glad they took the trip to Mexico last year as she has some good photos and memories.

It's good to be reminded that we need to do the things we want to do and not put them off. Nobody knows how much time they have left.

Ah, Daisy. There is a difference between BPD and BP. BPD is a personality disorder which often also has narcissism and BP is characterized by mood swings. Not the same at all though they may show some similar symptoms. Either way relationships with them are difficult for sure. Glad your son is getting properly diagnosed. Maybe he can be helped.

Starting to do a bit of downsizing here. Mostly selecting things that I am not using here to be trashed or donated - like extra bedding, a few bits of furniture, clothing..Time to clean out the fridge and freezers too. If it hasn't been used since i came here, I think it needs to go! 😊

Golden, I've been though it all, 😂 my BP son is now diagnosed with OCD not BP, I'm not sure , maybe he was diagnosed BP because of his age and then when he got older and in control of his emotions , it was better diagnosed. My second has toretetts, my 3rd is mildly autistic, number 4 mostly his fathers golden child. Then me with dyslexia, all nerodivergent issues, except my youngest.

That was supposed to go under general topics. Opps

way - glad it went well. Some blessings in that partner inherited mil's half of the condo. I am sure you are right about partner's daughter. I'm truly thankful for you and DH that this caregiving nightmare is nearly over. You both have earned your rest from it.

Golden,

It was fine . By the 4th parent , we have it down to a science . Got rid of her clothes etc. DH only wanted photos and any important papers . Partner is still living in the house , so we didn’t have to deal with any household items , nor did DH want any of it . The other family will have to do the bulk of that cleaning out unless partner ( with advanced Alzheimer’s ) burns down the place . Have no idea how long they plan on leaving partner alone . Partner inherited MIL’s half of the house , so not our problem .

My guess is the daughter will have the house put in her name or in a trust and make sure they wait the 30 month lookback before applying for NY Medicaid . At some point the daughter will most likely have partner live at her house ( until they reach the 30 months ).
That daughter is all about preserving the house as an inheritance for her to sell later .

way - How did the cleaning out and dealing with mil's stuff go? It can't have been easy. (((((hugs))))

I had a whole lot of plastic bags saved from the grocery store . I would line my bathroom trash cans with them . But my stockpile is low now since I’ve been bringing my reusables for shopping .

My husband hates the paper straws in restaurants .

Yeah some stores were ridiculous with handing out bags, Walmart in particular used to double bag everything, often even single light weight items. Back in the 90's we used to have bags full of bags that we sent out to recycling every week, now our municipal program says they won't even take them because there is no market for them.

I do think without the plastic grocery bags, there is less trash on the sides of the road, you would see them floating all over the place

I don't mind not having plastic bags to pack my groceries. I use cloth ones too and keep some in the car. It just seems a bit hypocritical, but I guess they have to do what they can or be seen to do what's politically correct.
(1)
Report

Hm yeah, I've been plastic bag free for so long I can't remember. I usually keep a small foldable bag on me whenever I leave the house and I keep several reusable bags in my car, but when I get groceries I prefer to use bins (it's so much faster than bagging)
We need to pay for paper bags Hothouse so I wouldn't welcome doubling up!

living In the Bay Area I became used to no bags years ago. When we went to Hawaii a few months ago, Safeway actually double bagged their paper bags! Such luxury. 😁

Just a funny story, NYS doesn't do plastic bags, im use to it, doesn't bother me. When we go away , people at the registers of the states that have plastic, look at me so odd when I just pile everything in my arms. One said something, don't you want a bag, I was like, oh good idea. He looked at me like I had some major issues. 😂.

Oh gosh, Way. That was uncalled for and unkind.. Like the superstars that used to travel to Fort Mc in their private jets and criticize the oil sands for environmental issues. Or no plastic bags at grocery check-outs, but lots of items wrapped in lots of plastic. Yeah, right. Gimme a break!!!
(2)
Report

Waytomisery also which is better, throwing away paper, or using more water to wash the dishes, and soap going in the ground.

Some things I do absolutely agree with, I think we use to much plastic, but other things like paper plates . Yeah no felling guilt about that one!

Report

An observation nothing to do with caregiving. My daughter in law made a comment on Mother’s Day because occasionally when my kids are over , I’ll be lazy and get out paper plates . She said she doesn’t use paper plates because of the environment . Mind you we had driven back home that morning from NY after cleaning out my recently deceased MIL’s belongings the day before . We ordered and picked up Italian food when we got home .

However , this week my son and DIL are away and I’ve been going over to feed her cats . Nearly everyday a box arrives from online shopping . Last I checked boxes were basically made of paper . The jet fuel burned to get her to her vacation destination is not good for the environment either . 🙄🤔🤷‍♀️
