Hi there
The HUD portal is

Pick your state and you will be able to see a list of elderly apartments that are subsidized. This means the rent would be capped at 30% of your income.
You have to send away for the application and then fill it out. This is a lot of work but it does give hope that you could find an affordable apartment.
The other thing you can do is look up the housing authority for your town and ask them for an application for subsidized elderly housing.
These applications are work to fill out and the waiting lists for apartments are long. My parents were just notified that they were # 133 on the list for a local complex and another one has a wait of 5 years ... But I am hoping that they get a break somehow in the process.

How independent are you? Are you willing to rent a room from a family? What do you do for fun? Would you be a asset to a family with two working parents? I would welcome a boarder that does all the laundry and keeps the "parlor bathroom" presentable.
Everyone who is stuck--- has to try thinking "outside of the box". If five of you join together like Kate and Allie or the Golden girls you will be just fine. Figure out what you still can do. Laundry is a huge task that is piling up in most houses. Many of us do not have the first clue how to cook. If you still drive, pick up and drop off for kids is an enormous burden on two working parents. Piano lessons are lacking in many childrens up bringing.

Snowball-- we can not tell. You need more information. We would need more information to help you. Do you still own a house? Do you have a spouse? Is your home big enough to rent a room or have a family move in with you? Have you tried to get section 8 rent subsidies? Perhaps a local agency will be the most help.

I too am a low income senior living on Social Security only. My income does not qualify me for help in food SNAP. I pay $300.00 out in health care with Medicare and AARP Supplement? It is a worry every day with prices going up and up. Where do I turn for help?

Do contact your local dept on aging but this site may be helpful as well.

In my town, the subsidized housing in always in an iffy neighborhood, which I think it outrageous. The very people most vulnerable to crime would be seniors and disabled.

I would like a list of assisted living places with prices and amenities.

You have two choices. The "size of your house" or "the location of your house" to make it more affordable. If the choice is for the level of care you need to move somewhere where the wages are depressed. All of these seem to point rural to me or Costa Rica.
