I enjoy playing the spider solitaire game that Microsoft has available on my computer, but that, of course, comes with advertisements. Today out of curiosity I followed a "story" about signs of Alzheimer's which sent me off to a web site which claims "...And they DON’T want you to know that there is now a quick, safe and 100% natural way to reverse memory loss, and cure every single form of dementia in a matter of weeks."
I get that it is just paid advertising, but I think that including this kind of garbage on their sites implies an endorsement and legitimacy. Shouldn't companies like Microsoft be held to a higher standard??

When government spending is slashed on things like consumer protection...you get no protection.

Government should not be looked at as a business....government isn't there to make money..it is there it protect its citizens. That costs money. No funding? No agency doing the job.

Sure, it is actually illegal. No one enforcing it.

RM, MS and Comcast are like the robber barons of history - powerful, controlling and in perhaps a new dimension of abuse of power, responsive to no one, despite Comcast's self serving promotions and ads about how great it is.

Lol, GardenArtist! You are far from alone in your dislike of Microsoft. My brother has worked in the computer industry most of his adult life as one of those guys that thinks things up then figures out how to create and implement. He refers to MS as The Evil Empire. Running a close second to his dislike of MS is - Comcast!

WIN 10 is a REALLY aggressive program with tentacles that reach out into many areas of computers.

There would be some good news articles, but there's so much garbage, including the commercials before the news videos start, that now I just copy the URL and open it in Firefox, which doesn't have the MS ad saturation.

What I also find arrogant is that MS presumes to know what I want.

What really annoys me is when I go out to do research on anything on the Web, next thing I know there are ads directing me to products regarding that subject matter. Even though I have zero use for the products as I was just curious on the subject matter.

Or if I order something from, let's say Staples, and low and behold, next days there are ads for the products I had ordered. HELLO I already ordered that stuff yesterday, I don't need to duplicate the order :P

I'm not sure the ISP has anything to do with it, these are ads embedded on the MS games site, so they would only display content that pays a fee to the site/MS.
My browser is set to do not track and I don't allow 3rd party cookies and dele all cookies on closing.
I hadn't noticed the offensive click bait ads on Edge because I seldom use it, but they sound very similar to what shows up on my games app. Since they are only on the home page I mostly ignore them, but sometimes if I am incredibly bored I might check out something that catches my eye.
BTW I do block ads on most sites, but running Win 10 has allowed MS to circumvent my standard ad blocker :(

BTW, my ISP is Comcast, and I think's it's actually worse than MS.

Ah, Microsoft, the paradigm of irresponsible software releases and expecting users to beta test their creations. I hate MS; my next computer will not be an MS based one.

MS is only interested in control and revenue. Although I've never seen a TOS for the games programs, I'm guessing it's hidden somewhere in MS's overall TOS for WIN 10 or other operating software. You can believe MS has covered its corporate butt somewhere.

I think that it's unconscionable and irresponsible. And a provider of operating as well as application software should be held to a higher standard in determining what to allow.

Have you seen the opening page of the "upgraded" Internet Explorer, or the "Edge" software? They're loaded with links to junk ads, or trick ads designed to lure someone in but the actual content has nothing to do with the ad.

It's not unusual for the ads to be inflammatory or lurid, such as ways to make millions or dire predictions for the economy, or buxom women. I'm still waiting for them to show ads of hot men - but the predominance of women in revealing clothing tells me that MS designs and hawks these ads to men, not for women.

The Weather Channel is probably worse - there's a lot more junk ads on it, and it significantly slows down loading of the program.

I think these practices are so offensive, but other than switch to Apple, what options do we have? I also hate being in this situation b/c as consumers, we've lost a lot of clout that would normally accompany buying power - our choices are limited.

Who is your internet server? I suspose Microsoft could require servers who facilitate their products hold a higher standard as to who is allowed to advertise- but I imagine that's too far up the line, too far removed and could get sticky with conflict of interest and First Amendment issues.

Ultimately, I would think it would be the servers responsible in situations such as allowing fraudulent advertising.
