Yes the switching is crazy-making. But never having a glimpse of the real person within them would be too sad to endure, I think.

Yeah, one minute we're both laughing together so heartily. Then he stops in the middle of his laughter, and says something mean to me. Complete 100% change - in mid-laughter. Very hard to guard yourself when you're heartily laughing with your parent.
